World premiere of the new production by Jaume Plensa of Verdi`s Opera "Macbeth"

For the first time, artist Jaume Plensa takes the lead as theatre director and, together with the Liceu, premieres the new production of Verdi`s Macbeth.

Plensa concentrates all his personal and artistic imagination in a hypnotic production faithful to the text of the opera Macbeth, in which different formats and materials are combined to capture the aesthetic symbols of the artist`s most representative language.

The costumes, also designed by Plensa, transform the characters into stylised sculptures in his purest style.

Macbeth was the first of three adaptations of William Shakespeare on which Verdi worked, an opera that revealed the composer`s maturity as he combined classical bel canto with a new dramatic impetus.

The leading roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth will be performed by two of the strongest dramatic voices today: baritone Luca Salsi and soprano Sondra Radvanovsky.

The renowned maestro Josep Pons will conduct this first-class cast with the aim of maximising the full orchestral colour of the score.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu will premiere Plensa`s Macbeth on 16 February and it will run until 3 March.

As an integral part of this world premiere, the Gran Teatre del Liceu will house one of the artist`s installations in Sala Miralls until the last day of the performance.

Starting on 25 February, the opera can be viewed live on Liceu+LIVE and later, its subsequent edited version will be available on the same platform.

In spring, the CaixaForum+ platform will release a documentary that will reveal Jaume Plensa`s creative process over the course of nine months.
